Rhys is the son of Queen Taimine, though not of king Wilhelm. He was the product of a liaison between the Queen’s Maiden and the king’s knight, Sir Valmus. Normally this would result in the marriage of the knight and the retirement of the Queen’s Lady. Unfortunately for the couple, King Wilhelm selected Taimine as his second Queen following the death of his first wife, Liana. The king chose to overlook the liaison, but Taimine was forced to abandon her son Rhys. No acknowledgment could be made toward the boy - he was a mere commoner in the king’s eyes. Valmus was also not allowed to acknowledge the boy as his son, although he did care for him, using the excuse that he was an orphan he had adopted from a village that had been destroyed by monsters. Rhys grew up in the capital, under the watchful eyes of the staff of Fanardis Castle, as well as his parents - though he did not know who they were. When he was young, he spent a great deal of time under Leonith’s wing, and wander in Sir Valmus’ shadow - Leonith’s uncle.
Two years after he was born, Queen Taimine gave birth to a daughter - Ariellis. Ariellis was always among the Palace staff, taking a special liking to Sir Valmus, Leonith and Rhys. She would wander off and follow them around, from the time she was old enough to walk the palace grounds on her own. Rhys was admittedly annoyed by her at first, but later took a liking to the little girl whose kindness touched something in his heart. Of all the people in the Palace, she was the only one he felt any real connection to. As the years passed the bonds between them grew, all the while neither one knowing the blood ties between them. They, along with Leonith and the young Feralan Miri were known to have their share of adventures while in their youth.
When he was old enough, Rhys became a page, and then a squire under Sir Valmus. He joined the Queen’s Guard, a group of protectors whose first duty was seeing to the safety of Queen Taimine, and by extension Princess Airi. In that group, Rhys finally began to find a place where he felt some sense of purpose, though he did find himself in the presence of Prince Aden, a man of whom he found he had a growing dislike.
Five years ago, everything came crashing down. In a surprise attack by Aeccordian, Fanardis Castle was in flames, the King and Queen were dead. Just before the attack, Sir Valmus had revealed to Rhys who he was, and why he had to protect the Queen. Rhys managed to get to Airi in the attack, but on the way out they were attacked by a sorceress named Rii. When All seemed lost, Sir Valmus appeared, buying enough time for Rhys to escape with the Princess. After getting Airi to safety, he wanted to go back for his mentor and the Queen, but was stopped by Leonith and Ceri, both of whom knew the Queen and her protector were both beyond Rhys’ aid.
After Fanardis Castle fell, Rhys dedicated himself wholly to revenge against the Aeccordians and the protection of Airi. Since her brother had disappeared in the attack, she was not only his half-sister but the heir of Fanardis. To those other than the Princess, he became cold and withdrawn. The only people who seemed to be able to break the shell were Airi and Leonith - and then only at times.
One evening, Airi left the camp, saying she was going to attempt a difficult spell to aid the refugee Fanardians. While she was away, Rhys spent double duty scouting and guarding, both to watch for his sister and to keep his mind away from her. One night, he was called into a clearing by strange sounds and by the curiosity of Miri. What he found was three strange young women standing next to the corpse of a dragon. Something suspicious was definitely going on. He finally decided the best thing to do was to take them back to camp.
The arrival of the three young women would change his life and those of his companions forever. Shortly after their arrival, he, Leonith and Loki brought the girls with them on a scouting mission. After an incident involving pissing off the Captain of the Guard and setting tents on fire, Rhys and Leonith went in to help the hapless women. In the end, their efforts didn’t help at all.
Rhys awakened to find himself in the Queen’s old bedroom, strangely enough untouched by the flames. He wandered the castle, seeing Airi and Aden’s rooms as they were. How had they survived. He found the answer waiting for him in Airi’s bedroom. Rii quickly brought Rhys under her power, but a summoning from the Emperor called her away from him before she could do anything fun.
The only fun she had was after the girls and Leonith found Rhys in the Queen’s chamber where Rii had left him. Upon her return, she forced him to attack his friends. The result was a battle which relieved Rhys of his had and Rii of her head.
Wounded from battle, Rhys slipped into the icy reaches of death. But somehow, as she had always been, Airi was there for him. Using her healing gift, Airi brought him back to life and regenerated his hand. She pushed herself far enough to cause injury and when Rhys found out about it he was horrified he had caused her harm.
After her recovery, and one encounter with a basilisk which left the growing band with a pink chocobo mascot, Rhys and the others went to the Caves of ** to find a way to bring the strange women home. There they encountered wraiths - creatures which drained the will of all they touched. Rhys fell victim to their attacks, and would have become a wraith himself if not for Ryuu - the strange woman who many mistook for a man at first. Rhys, especially in his current state, couldn’t understand why she would want to save him.
Just when things couldn’t get worse, they did. The sorcerer Falz appeared and brought them all into the caves again, where a battle took place. The battle ended in the girls being sent home to Tokyo - with Rhys and Leonith along for the ride!
In Tokyo, Rhys met the man apparently responsible for the girl’s first trip to Tokyo - Shion, and his master Dr. Cid. He also met a strange girl named Sora, and felt a growing fondness for the white-haired girl who had saved his life, as well as a girl who was a friend of another one of the Tokyo women who reminded him of Airi. He met a strange old man named Dr. Cid who fell under attack. In an effort to pay back the girls for all they had done for him and his friend, Rhys attacked Dr. Cid’s attackers alone. He managed to fight his way free of them, and into the heart of Tokyo.
While alone in the strange world, he had time to think about everything that had happened, before being discovered by Boko. The pink chocobo brought him back, just in time for another attack by the gray-suited goons who were after Dr. Cid. That night, he spent time with Naiyami, and realized just how much he needed to go home.
The next day he was sent home. It was supposed to be routine, but a powerful henchman of Hassai - the man behind the attacks on Dr. Cid - named Seperoth attacked. In the battle, Naiyami sacrificed herself to save Rhys, just as he and Leonith were sent home - alone. Only now they returned to the camp to find that Airi had disappeared! Alone, Rhys was surprised by the times his mind kept going back to the white-haired girl.
A month later, the girls re-appeared, with some unexpected additions from the neighboring kingdom of Laconia. An expedition into Aeccordian revealed a final invasion plot by the Aeccordians, led by those none other than Lord Falz, Rii, and Prince Aden! Aden was killed in combat, not by Rhys but by Misao. Or so they thought. Instead of dying Aden transformed into an Erydine with black wings and attacked! They were saved by intervention by King Cyrrus.
Once back in the mountain kingdom, Rhys was reunited with Airi and surprisingly enough Shion. This meeting would be the beginning of the end. While in the mountains, Prince Aden attacked, taking Airi has hostage. Ryuu tried to save Airi even as Aden destroyed the Palace beneath her feet. Seeing her fall, Rhys threw caution to the wind and released the special ability he had been hiding so long to save Ryuu’s life. He had come to realize she was as important to him as Airi. In the end, Aden was killed, and Rhys found he actually felt bad because of so hard it hit Airi.
After the death of Prince Aden, the group headed into Aeccordian to kill the man responsible for some much suffering - the Emperor himself. Except the Emperor himself turned out to be a victim of another! Following the trail of clues, the group realized it led back to Ryuu’s home world - to Hassai. From there, Rhys pledged to keep himself at Ryuu’s side, even if it cost him his life. And it did. In the final battle with Hassai, Rhys gave up his life to save Ryuu. His sacrifice was the pivotal point in the battle which led to the final destruction of Hassai and the salvation of Earth.
Once Hassai was dead and Earth saved Rhys returned to Fanardis, along with all three women. From then on, he and Ryuu would be together, helping to rebuild Fanardis into something brighter and stronger.
