Sir Valmus was not born to nobility. He grew up in a small farming village in the rural parts of Fanardis, living with his poor mother and father, and younger sister, Lily. While most village boys took up trades, Valmus left home at the age of fourteen to seek his fortune. He found that fortune in the form of a wandering knight. Following his knight-master, Valmus learned the ways of war craft and chivalry. At eighteen, he came with his master to Fanardis Castle, where he met King Wilhelm. A year later, after service alongside the more distinguished knights, Valmus was knighted himself.
For years, Valmus served the realm as a true knight. He won the respect and love of many of the people of Fanardis, as he was one of the few knights who still followed the old code of chivalry. He returned to his home when he was twenty-two, to find that his parents had died and that Lily had married the village blacksmith. The blacksmith never cared for Valmus, saying that in his search for glory he had left behind his own family to toil and finally die. Lily, however, was much more forgiving. She made Valmus promise to return to her as often as he could. Valmus kept that promise.
He came of and on until one day he returned to find the blacksmith had died - he had dropped one day at the forge, and no one could revive him - leaving Lily alone to raise her family. She did the best she could, but she had many children, and the oldest - Leonith - was only twelve. Valmus agreed to take Leonith with him, to learn the trade of blacksmith, like his father, from the Palace blacksmith. Valmus would care for him in the city, and send money he made back to his mother, to help with his younger siblings.
Meanwhile, Valmus had found interest at court as well. After King Wilhelm married, Valmus came to know one of the new Queen’s handmaidens, Taimine, very well. They came to love one another, and Valmus vowed he would go to Taimine’s foster-father, King Cyrrus to ask for her hand. Before he left, they shared a single night together, at Taimine’s request. While in the mountains, Valmus learned from Cyrrus himself that king Wilhelm planned to make Taimine his wife. Valmus returned, determined to stop the king, but Taimine herself pleaded for him not to do such a thing. She would be fine as Queen - and that would not change her love for him.
Valmus reluctantly agreed, but soon came to regret his decision. When it was discovered the first child Taimine bore was not the king’s son, but Valmus’ the king order that neither parent acknowledge the child. Instead, Valmus took him in to raise him as a foundling, never telling Rhys that his foster-father was his true father. He regretted it further still as he discovered King Wilhelm had become cruel to Taimine, as well as he was becoming cruel to his people.
Valmus decided he had to do something for the sake of his people. It was his duty as a true knight to relieve his suffering people of a bad king. With some of the other palace staff, he formed a plan to assassinate Wilhelm and set his son Aden - who showed promise as a king- on the throne.
The night of the assassination, Valmus pulled Rhys aside knowing that he could not die with the secret on his conscience - and if he failed in what he intended to do, and most likely even if he succeeded, he would be put to death for his crime. However, before Valmus could kill the king, the Aeccordians attacked. Valmus ran to Taimine’s side, but arrived too late to save her. With her dying breath, she asked him to go to Rhys and Airi, to protect them. He went to them, and arrived just in time - for they had fallen under attack by the Sorceress Rii.
Valmus bought them time to escape, and with the spirit of Taimine at his side, laid down his life to protect the future of Fanardis.
